Is there any travel insurance that will cover PRE-EXISTING conditions when the airline ticket is purchased from the credit card company? The ticket is non refundable from Chase’s perspective as I cannot put the points back in my account. For instance, a ticket purchased with the Chase Reserve on points is not covered by Chase for pre-existing conditions and the ticket was not covered by the extra insurance I purchased from World Wide Trip Protector through USAA because I could not show proof of purchase. The only alternative that i have found was to go back to the airline and after paying the cancellation fee I am stuck with a big credit to use within a year. Please offer a solution please.

Hi Wendy. Sorry you had to cancel your trip and lose some of its value. Unfortunately, if you use points or miles to purchase a ticket, you cannot insure that portion of your trip. You can, however, insure pre-paid, non refundable costs such as other airfare, lodging, cruises, tours or other trip related expenses. The coverage you would purchase to cover these expenses would be trip cancellation and interruption benefits. You didn’t say why your trip had to be cancelled but if it was a medical issue, this is one of the most common reasons people cancel trips and also a common coverage to purchase. By pre-existing conditions I’m not sure if you’re referring to a pre-existing medical condition that was present before you booked your trip. If so, these can also be insured against with certain conditions. You cannot go back and insure something that has already happened if that is what you are asking. You may try to file a claim with World Wide Trip Protector for the amount of the cancellation fee as you should be able to document that expense. Here is some information on insuring trips purchased with points/miles. https://www.insuremytrip.com/travel-insurance-plans-coverages/frequent-flier-miles/

The article was very informative and complete, but you did not mention Chase Sapphire Reserve. Are the benefits the same as those offered on the Sapphire Preferred card?

Hi Barbara – that card has now been added and is very similar to the Chase Sapphire Preferred with an additional benefit of roadside assistance. Thank you!
